What is OHSAS 18001 Standard 
This Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS 18001) Standard and the Guidelines for Implementation of OHSAS 18001, have been developed in response to customer demand for a recognizable occupational health and safety management system standard against which it has to be assessed.

OHSAS 18001 is developed to be compatible with the ISO 9001, ISO 14001 standard. This standard is now having more importance of - Health. This standard functions on (Plan-Do-Check-Act) principle. Ohsas 18001, OHSAS 18001 Standard

OHSAS 18001 specifies requirements for an Occupational Health and Safety Management System, to enable an organization to control its OHS risks and improve its OHS performance. This OHSAS 18001 standard is intended to address occupational health and safety, and is not intended to address other health and safety areas such as employees well being and property. International Standard specifies requirements for OHS Management System (OHSAS 18001), to enable an organization to develop and implement a policy and objective which take into account legal requirements and other requirements and other requirements which the organization subscribes. The system applies to those occupational health and safety requirements that the organization identifies and those which it can control. The system aims in monitoring the legal requirement. All the requirements in this International Standard are intended to be incorporated into OHS management system(OHSAS 18001). The extent of the application factors depends on the nature of the activity of the organization, product, services and location where it functions.

OHSAS 18001 standard is divided into four clauses. Clause 1 to 3 is general clause which is related to Scope, Reference publications and Terms and Definitions. Clause 4 (OHS Management System Requirements) is subdivided into 06 sub clauses General Requirement, OHS policy, Planning, Implementation and Operation, Checking and Management Review.

The system focuses on continual improvement. This is done by having Management Review Meeting, Internal Audit, Corrective and Preventive action, Monitoring of Quality Objective and Management Programmes.
Who can go in for OHSAS 18001 Certification

  1. Organization that wishes to establish and OHS management System to eliminate or minimize OHS risks to personnel and other interested parties who could be exposed to OHS hazards associated with the activities.
  2. Who can implement and continually improve an OHS performance within the organization and who can demonstrate the conformity to the standard and meeting the applicable legal and statutory requirements.
